Overview

In 2006, the Bahamas embarked on a program to install solar-powered airfield lighting systems in remote islands. The Bahamian government placed a US $2.6 million order with Carmanah for the supply of 16 wirelessly controlled solar LED airfield lighting systems. These systems were installed on remote islands throughout the Bahamas from October to November 2006.

The Bahamas comprised over 700 islands with a small percentage occupied. There are two major international airports on the larger islands and smaller airfields on the smaller islands which take small aircraft traffic. Sometimes air ambulances have to operate to these islands. The majority of these domestic airports did not have airfield lighting in place and the government required a cost-effective, efficient, and reliable lighting technology to improve nighttime air traffic. Carmanah’s solar-powered LED airfield lighting is easy to install without any disruption to airfield operations, and it avoids the capital, maintenance, and operating costs associated with diesel generator-powered systems.
