PRESS RELEASE: CARMANAH PRODUCTS PROVE EXCEPTIONAL VERSUS CONVENTIONAL RETROREFLECTIVE MARKERS

On the 9th of May, 2003, the Port of Shelton General Aviation Airport (WA) tested Carmanah solar-powered LED taxiway edge lights against retroreflective markers with the FAA and IES Committee in attendance.
The solar-powered LED lighting test was conducted by the Illuminating Engineering Society, which currently stands as the largest airport lighting committee in the United States of America. Two research and development officers from the Federal Aviation Administration William J. Hughes Technical Center administered the taxiway edge light test.
The test results proved Carmanah’s solar-powered LED taxiway edge lights to be exceptional—with superior visual guidance over the conventional retroreflective markers. A total of 4 general aviation airplanes were required to taxi in both directions while the passengers recorded visual guidance data for a total of 25 minutes. Advantages of the solar-powered LED edge lights were tabulated by an FAA-designed questionnaire filled out by volunteer general aviation pilots and passengers. The FAA, IES Committee and volunteer pilots unanimously found that the solar LED aviation lights provided significantly increased visual guidance, self-sufficient illumination on the taxiway corners, exceptional long range and short-term lighting cues and overall improved safety.
Carmanah wishes to thank the Illuminating Engineering Society and the Federal Aviation Administration for their efforts and expertise in conducting the test. Through the dedicated work of the IES Committee and the FAA, it is hoped that cost-effective solar-powered LED lighting standards will be developed to provide a safer, more regulated, general aviation airport industry.
